●7 hours come from individual community service you procure on your own- (food/clothing drives, volunteering at a hospital, nursing home, church, (tutoring peers) A signature is required from the person or location where you assisted.
Babysitting for family/friends will not count as individual hours. You are not allowed to log hours for any service you are paid for.
●7 hours come from club sponsored events – these are volunteer opportunities NHS specifically posts on our calendar or that we post on this website. An officer, adviser or volunteer coordinator must sign off on hours. Attendance at meetings is essential to acquire information on these events.
The maximum hours you may accumulate at one event is four (4) hours. We would like you to serve the community in a variety of ways. Tutoring someone on the piano for 4 hours on Monday and 4 hours on Tuesday will not earn 8 hours for you. If you volunteer someplace on a regular basis, that is fantastic! Foothill's NHS offers community service out in the community, not in just one location for one organization.
(If you have more than 7 CLUB hours, you may count them as INDIVIDUAL hours. Club hours spill over but you are not able to count more than 7 INDIVIDUAL hours as CLUB hours.)
●Hour sheets must be turned in by the deadline (end of each quarter.) Every day your hour log is late, you must complete one additional club hour of service. If your hour sheet is not turned in within one week (5 school days) of the due date, you will be removed from our National Honor Society member/participant list. It is imperative that you follow the timelines and expectations of service opportunities and hour sheet due dates.
●Dues are $20. $10 for the shirt which is to be worn at all club sponsored activities. No shirt – no participation! $10 is the NHS club fee to purchase supplies. Dues may be paid to the school banker or on the Foothill online store. Supplies include cleaning materials and toys for donations around the holiday season as well as other items needed for volunteer drives.
●Induction is usually in April or May. You must complete a minimum of 42 hours (club + individual) to be inducted.
●Registering for the texting and/or email program, and checking this information on a consistent basis, is a requirement for membership in NHS. If there are changes to service opportunities, cancellations, or last minute opportunities, we need to be able to contact you quickly.
The best way to do this is via the teacherweb.com texting program. On this site, click on “Subscribe to this NewsFlash”. Add your name and email address. Subscribe again and enter your name and mobile device (cell phone) number to get text messages.

If you have to cancel your volunteer spot, you must text an officer (you will receive their phone numbers) to let them know you are cancelling. This must be done 24 hours prior to the event.
If you do not attend an event that you registered for, and you didn't cancel, it will be counted as one of the three absences you are given for the year. Make sure to stay on top of your schedule.
